The importance of paying your dues when entering an industry is often emphasized to young professionals, but we are now seeing more and more entrepreneurs venturing into their own successful business endeavors early in their careers, bypassing the five or ten years of expertise and experience that we were told was required to run a successful business on our own.

Why is this?

With the rise of young entrepreneurs proving it’s possible to succeed, along with the numerous benefits involved with being your own boss it only makes sense that more and more people are starting their own ventures in their twenties. As a business owner myself, I’ve listed some of the many benefits to starting your own business in your twenties.

You are in control

Owning your own business allows you to spend your time devoted to the tasks that drive your passions!

If you don’t enjoy doing something, you can hire it out. While the start of your business often involves doing most operations yourself, starting in your twenties gives you plenty of time to learn which tasks you enjoy doing and are most efficient at, and the ones that you’d rather hire someone who can accomplish the same task better than you can, and enjoys it more.

You set your own goals

Our twenties are the years where we start envisioning what the rest of our life will look like. Starting your business early allows you to mold it to accommodate the life you want. Being able to set my own goals has been a huge benefit to owning my own company. This flexibility is something rarely found working for someone else.

Having a direct impact on your customer

Many young professionals want to make an impact. Having your own business allows you to be directly involved in ensuring your mission comes to life. Seeing your business mission play out is incredibly satisfying. I love the feeling of accomplishment that I get when I help another small business succeed.

Flexible working schedule

Flexible hours allow me to set my own schedule and work from any location. The ability to do this with video meetings, widespread Wi-Fi availability, and other tools developed to make working from home possible gives me the ability to optimize my time. I am able to enjoy traveling, more time with family, and spend time doing things that matter to me like volunteering at a memory care facility!

Ability to pick who you work with

We’ve all had coworkers we wouldn’t have picked ourselves, right?. I love having the ability to decide who I work with and on what terms.

  • Clients: I have found that I want to work with people who want to work with me. If a client doesn’t appreciate or value the work that I do, they are not someone I want to work with. Having the authority to work with people that bring value and joy to my life makes my work so much more enjoyable.

  • Employees/Service providers: I get to choose my team! This is true whether you were to start your business in your twenties or in your fifties, the younger you establish your team, the better in my opinion!

The opportunity to chase new opportunities

Not being a salaried employee gives you the ability to chase new opportunities and grow your income at a larger scale! A new contract means new income (but also, more work!). The ability to take on more work at a younger age, gives you more earning potential over your lifetime.

Client connection

I love the clients that I get to work with! Networking is always emphasized as important to young professionals and there is no better way to network, in my opinion, than to have a company that you believe can provide true value to people. I love grabbing going to lunch, grabbing a cup of coffee or happy hour with people that may benefit from my services.

Endless learning opportunities

Growing a business is hard but the earlier you learn, the more likely you will succeed. Being a young entrepreneur presents so many opportunities to learn and grow! You can carve out dedicated time to focus on things that are important to you and what you want to be better educated about. Personally, I dedicate two hours each week to personal advancement time. I read educational books, take classes, and watch webinars to gain knowledge that will help my company grow.
